There are thousands of different options and careers out there, making it hard to choose the right career for you. If you have no idea what you are looking for when choosing your next career, then it may seem like a mountain of a challenge.
However, by following our steps to choosing your next career, you may find it’s not as hard as you feared.
The first thing you need to do when choosing your next career is to assess yourself. What skills do you have and what are your values? There are some great self-assessment tools and career tests online that you can use to learn more about yourself. These tools will generate a short list of careers that you may be interested in.
Put together a list of jobs you think you’d like to try, add it to the edited version of the list from the online tools and see what you’re left with. This is then your list to do research from. Look at these careers in different industries, what they involve and the pay you can expect. Then cross off the careers that are no longer of interest to you.
Now your list is shorter, you can start exploring the careers a little bit deeper. Look at any licenses or training that is needed for the role. Have a look in your local area to see if there are companies that needed employees in that career field. Look at the job outlook and progression within the role to make sure it is still a suitable career for you now and in the future.
Pop onto LinkedIn and look for people in that career. Send them a message to ask for a chat to talk about their job role, what they like and don’t like. This will give you a real insight into the career and help you know what to expect. This may also help you get a job in the future as you’ve spoken to someone in that career already, so they could pass your CV onto others.
Now you have chosen the career that interests you the most, you need to create a career action plan. You know the skills, training or qualifications you need, so start getting them. Put down everything you need to know or have achieved to apply for that career. Plan it out, step by step. When you have completed the career action plan start hunting for your next career.
